postI’d vote for Obama… - General - 17th October

Meanwhile, Barack Obama said he needed to correct some misconceptions about his background.

“I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father, Jor-el, to save the Planet Earth,” he said, in a reference to Superman.

He also listed his great strength as “my humility” and his greatest weakness as being “a little too awesome”.

postJust what have I been up to? - Me - 11th October
  • I went to a Western themed Murder Mystery party which was a lot of fun. I was the murderer and I got away with it! muhaha
  • My parents came up to visit and we went to the Balmoral Hotel for afternoon tea which was tea/coffee/sandwich/cake heaven in fantastic surroundings. Oh and we had a day in Glasgow as well.
  • I was attending a one day conference in Dublin for work, so Ria and I made a wee holiday of it and did some sightseeing. Lovely city, quite similar to Edinburgh. Thanks to the RyanAir sale our flights cost a whole £8.
  • I got promoted at work. Oh yes, I now have the word “Senior” in front of my job title.
  • I’ve signed up for evening classes in Graphic Design at Edinburgh College of Art. Had my first class last week which was mainly an introduction to Illustrator and admin with our tutor. They’ve got some nice kit: 22″ iMacs fully loaded with the complete Adobe suite. Should be interesting to see what I learn.
  • Ria and I are taking Ballroom dancing lessons at Dancebase. We’ve had five lessons so far and we’ve just got to turning in the Waltz. Trickier than you think…
postTaken - Movies & TV, Reviews - 11th October
  • Liam Neeson cuts a swathe through the Parisian underworld
  • Liam Neeson hits people in the face
  • Liam Neeson hits even more people in the face, a lot
  • It’s like an extended episode of 24 (roll on 24:Redemption)
  • Thoroughly enjoyable “B” movie style fun

postHellboy II : The Golden Army - Movies & TV, Reviews - 25th August
  • Script is funnier and slicker than Hellboy 1
  • Very fantasy based, as opposed to Hellboy 1’s more historical/urban setting
  • CGI is, of course, flawless
  • Luke Goss can act!
  • del Toro’s usual inspired creature design

postFestival: Nouvelle Vague - Edinburgh, Music, Reviews - 8th August
  • Fantastic performance
  • Great slightly surreal acoustic cover of the God Save the Queen
  • Female french accents that make you weak at the knees
  • Everyone singing along to Love Will Tear Us Apart was a nice moment
  • I want to see more live bossa-nova style music now!

Also seems like we picked the right night to go, the next day the set was cut short by a fire alarm.

postFestival: Camille O’Sullivan - Edinburgh, Reviews - 5th August

This was a fun night, although I can see how it would be better in smaller, more intimate venue. I’m not sure if she actually has a set-list or just makes it up on the night. It was a fantastically anarchic performance, the band just seems to try and keep up with whatever she feels like singing. But, hey, she’s hot! More about Camille on her interwebnets site.

postThe Dark Knight - Movies & TV, Reviews - 3rd August

Whoah, it’s pretty Dark. I mean, like, really dark. I kept forgetting it was only 12A rated and then getting confused when you didn’t see any blood or real violence. All the violence was implied and off-camera, which in some cases is actually more effective as our own twisted minds fill in the blanks.

I loved the bank heist opening scene, oh so very Michael Mann - someone Nolan admits was a big influence. Ledger is magnificent as The Joker, the expression on this face when he is locked up in the police cell is fantastic. Reading the “trivia” on imdb it sounds like he went to a pretty dark place to get the character right, something which unfortunately may have contributed to his depression.

I really want to see it again now. I haven’t immediately wanted to see another film again for a while.
